Elaina Scougale became aware of 40 Days for Life less than three weeks ago after she stumbled upon Live Action, then Abby Johnson, the Planned Parenthood director who converted to a strong pro-life advocate. Elaina is currently in the process of contacting her church Hope Chapel to get involved. Meanwhile, she is also contacting churches in Arlington.

Then on Friday, she left me a message, "Hi! Schola! It's a success!" referring to her encouraging conversation with Pastor Rick Long at Atonement Church.

Lo & behold, God has already been working in Atonement Church.

David Graves, the Pro-Life Group leader along with his wife at Atonement Church had joined us in Spring 2011. We prayed with him at different occasions. But because we haven't seen him for a while we thought we had scared him away with our rosary. Nope! He's been keeping himself busy getting pro-life group together at his church.

It was quite a pleasant surprise to get his phone call on Saturday morning before his meeting with his Pastor Rick Long. He wanted to ask me a few questions about Everett 40 Days for Life.

+Praise & thanks be to God!

What an encouragement for us! We have been praying that more Christians of all denominations, not just Catholics, would answer God's call to pray for an end to abortion.

Among many things that David shared with me on Saturday morning, I was especially impressed with his mentioning about 180 movie. His Pastor showed the movie to the congregation about a month & a half ago. Then a very moved couple purchased 200 copies and passed them out for a $1 each. Wow! If you haven't already watched the movie, here it is: (Please note that in Catholic teaching, the "Thou shall not kill" is 5th Commandment. Otherwise, the movie is quite in line with our church teaching as well, in my opinion.)

Day 40! - Victory Rally!!! - on Palm Sunday.

+Praise & thanks be to God!
It's hard to believe that Day 40 has arrived though it feels like years as we have encountered so many hurting people and numerous signs of hope. I wish more talented writers would write about this. Perhaps Danielle Steele or even emerging talented writers can pick up stories from here and begin helping us heal our culture.

There are many writers among us - and many have written. But with fierce competition over our attention, either our hearts have to be open or the stories may need to be more compelling, pointed, and/or concise.

I woke up feeling overwhelmed because I didn't exactly have a written plan for our Victory Rally and there are so many undone projects, including life's most pressing matters, i.e. keeping house in order, etc. I was quickly falling into a self-paved guilt trip and into darkness.

It wasn't exactly turning out to be a joyful Palm Sunday. I felt like an utter failure. I vaguely thought that perhaps I could look forward to outpouring of grace somewhere, sometime - but when?! It definitely didn't seem like anytime soon. Oh, no! Another dreary day!

It was becoming very difficult to recall what Fr. Oakland yesterday (when he suddenly showed up shortly after 1 pm to join our vigil, just when a faithful couple were about to leave - thus I would have been alone) said about how God works best through our weakness - because our pride does not get in His way.

I barely made through 8 am Palm Sunday mass, yearning multiple times. I didn't want to stop by my favorite coffee and donut hours. I was feeling very antisocial and quickly ran towards our car immediately after mass.

Time passed by too fast! I struggled through noon when I had to get up to pick up cake from Costco.

In the midst of my struggle, I appreciated how the weather has warmed up and the outlines of white cumulus was distinct in the clear blue sky. And I slowly felt the signs of God's grace.

When I arrived at the Everett Knights of Columbus Hall, our Campaign co-Director Ed Mohs and my husband Brad were just about done with the set-up of chairs and round tables, the banner, signs, etc. (I was so proud them! I think I wowed! that I was quite impressed with the set-up!)

At about 2:45 pm, I headed for our final vigil site - Everett Planned Parenthood (32nd & Hoyt), less than a mile southeast. I was pleased to see that there were already at least three faithful prayer volunteers from Arlington and elsewhere.

We began at 3 pm sharp with Divine Mercy Chaplet on p.54 of Helpers of God's Precious Infants' prayer book. More people trickled in and joined us as we continued with Glorious mystery (p.49 - p.53) of the rosary. Meanwhile, aware that we had at least 30 minutes left, I realized that praying Stations of Cross (p.20 - p.34) would have been better done before the Glorious mystery. Oh, well! - a result of my own lack of planning. But prayers are always good! - even with a lack of proper order such as today. We concluded our prayer with the Helpers' Litany of the Holy Spirit (p.55 - p.56), led by Matt Ulrich of Seattle Helpers of God's Precious Infants. We had to pray Come Holy Spirit together as Matt's voice was being masked by either the landscaper's motorized trimmer or a strange car alarm across the street.

When Matt was concluding with the reading Revelation 21:1-4, just as we began to join him to overcome the competing noise, I was suddenly overcome with emotion, unable to read out loud, but without any tear! And my spirit was indeed lifted, nearly forgetting that I was feeling dreary all morning! +Thank you, Jesus our Savior and Love! Amen!

It almost seemed intentional that the landscapers arrived shortly after 3pm and started running the motor of his trimmer right next to us!

Shortly after 4 pm, we were greeted with a beautifully set-up tables by three (Mary, Marge, and ??) of the "grannies from St. Pius X - members of St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Daughters of Americas." Though uncertain on our program, at about 4:45pm began our program with grace before meal, led by Matt, with multiple delicious dishes, generously prepared by many of our faithful prayer volunteers at the Victory Rally.

I was hungry so Ed & I agreed that we should simply enjoy food and the company. So at about 5:20 pm, Ed began with greetings/welcome/national stats (i.e. 483 babies saved during this campaign; and this means 4082 - a size of Centerville, TN, or Lathrop, MI, babies since Fall 2007). Recalling my prior conversation with Ed yesterday about our Victory Rally general purpose to share meal, time, stories, experiences, etc. with our fellow pro-lifers, as I was about to invited speakers from the floor, Fr. Bloom suddenly showed up - what a pleasant surprise it was! Followed by Fr. Bloom's thoughtful talk, we had Mary Emanuel (who introduced us to her guest, the family of our saved baby #1 - from Friday, April 11 - of this campaign - and shared her other interesting experience of witnessing a result of "botched abortion" the following Friday - so much for "safe" abortion! - indeed a "legalized back alley abortion" as Fr. Frank bluntly describes the reality of any abortion.), Matt Ulrich (who invited us to Seattle Knights of Columbus sponsored fundraiser event for Prolife Washington, "the billboard people", his other ministry with his faithful wife Georgene), Elisabeth Cano (to talk about the importance of participating in political processes), and our new "non-denominational" Christian friend from Bryan College Station (she didn't participate in 40 Days for Life there, but was aware and was pleasantly surprised to see 40 Days for Life spread worldwide. She volunteered at the local crisis pregnancy center there).

Our event ended at about 6:40 pm with yet another blessing from a patient Fr. Bloom, who also pleaded that we pray for his parish (along with Holy Family - Seattle) World Youth Day delegates (39 of them) and their fundraising efforts. I was thinking that we should perhaps hold an essay/poster/photos/videos/other pro-life activities contest as a part of their fundraiser event. Hmmm... that could be our next project! :) Please pray and let us know what you think.

Please also be sure to thank Everett Knights of Columbus for their generosity and support of Everett 40 Days for Life. When I left with the faithful two men who arrived at 1 pm, each of us towards our own car, it was past 7:30 pm. And the sky was still clear, though dusk was setting in. +Praise & thanks be to God for a great 7th Campaign of 40 Days for Life right here in Everett.

Day 39 - 3rd Saturday Vigil after 7:30 am mass at St. Mary Magdalen Parish

HELP! Times in need of faithful prayer volunteers today: The number in ( ) means # of prayer volunteers currently signed up. I regret to confess that I was not very good with my 7 am vigil commitments during this campaign. I guess I now owe it to myself and God to catch up with that commitment in some form or other. Or perhaps God doesn't really care. I don't know.

Anyway, with Fr. Olson's blessings, I began to bring an announcement to invite everyone after 7:30 am mass to the 3rd Saturday Vigil since May 2009. This is an excellent opportunity to “offer authentic Christian spirituality” – i.e. the Truth that life is precious from the moment of conception to natural death – to the young people in our family and community as we approach Holy Week.

Please join our Parish Pro-Life Group and the concerned community members to proclaim the Gospel of Life, especially as we join Everett 40 Days for Life (7th Campaign here in Everett!) Spring 2011 Campaign (which began on Ash Wed. – until tomorrow! - 4/17 Palm Sunday).

Our 3rd Saturday Vigil will begin after mass – at about 8:30 and will end about 10 am today; or you may also join other prayer volunteers at Everett 40 Days for Life throughout the day until 7 pm today and from 3 pm – 4pm tomorrow, followed by a Victory Rally – potluck – at the Everett Knights of Columbus Hall from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm

(If you are interested and have questions, please gather in the back of the church immediately after mass.)

“A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. (after 7:40 am) - and it seemed to be getting worse, hardly able to reach out to anyone, while obviously some couples going into the building were abortion-minded, avoiding eye-contact, angry, disturbed, and/or women in comfortable baggy clothing, etc.

Then, as a hint of light, a woman walking past us towards the Planned Parenthood front entrance, shared with us, "I wish I had listened to you guys two years ago."

So I asked, "Did you have an abortion?" "Yes," she responded, "and I regret it. I feel so bad to this day," tears welling in her eyes.

When I asked her, "Have you turned to God for forgiveness?" she responded, "yes, but I still feel really bad."

I advised her, "well, God's mercy is greater than any of our sin."

"I know, and my pastor told me that, too. But it's still very hard." She responded.

I couldn't stop wondering why then she was about to enter Planned Parenthood, where so many abortions are done. (I wonder if anyone knows the statistics on the number of abortions being done at Everett Planned Parenthood.)

She told me that because she wants to avoid ever having to go through abortion again, she's taking a preventive measure and taking contraceptives.

Several questions came to my mind, but I decided to ponder them in my heart for now, while praying silently that she seeks Truth about contraceptives being "abortion in disguise" and that the fruit of contraception is abortion.

Handing out one of the Human Life Alliance's , "well, here's some information about where to get help for the post-abortion trauma. Please know that you are in our prayers and please also help us help others by spreading the truth about abortion. Many women have are in this building right now contemplating abortion."

"I know," she responded, and continued, "good luck to your efforts to save babies." It was definitely worth giving up an hour of vigil (from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm) for a greater good - meeting with Archbishop J. Do you know anything about high school seniors being peer advocates at Planned Parenthood? Kamiak High School has a girl who does this. Very disturbing to me. Sorry I missed you Sat. I saw you as I was parking my car. Very quiet - only one girl came for birth control. Thank you for all you do. God bless!

Parents, aunts, grandparents, siblings, and concerned citizens! Let us reach out to our community and contact Principals of schools to verify this information and make sure that our children are protected from the lies of Planned Parenthood. Contrary to what Planned Parenthood advocates, contraception is not going to protect our children from the so-called unplanned pregnancies, or rampant STDs.

Day 25 - Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Hope many of you believe that there are angels (and unfortunately demons, as well). As we continue to stand outside Everett Planned Parenthood for an end to abortion, it's clear that we are up against a great spiritual battle. How can we protect ourselves, our family members and our loved ones - and even everyone around us, including those patronizing the abortion mill and those condoning abortion?

We know that some evils can only be overcome with prayer AND fasting. We could definitely increase our prayer and fasting efforts. We could also recruit more prayer warriors - remember 3 people each day! - through community outreach.

We could also reach out to all the saints and angels to help us in any way possible. We could ask God to send us all the help that we need.

In that light, here's the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel:

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Or the Original Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel written by Pope Leo XIII in 1886.

You can also join HLI's St. Michael Prayer Campaign.

--------

We have 16 more days to go or 159 Vigil hours to go for our Everett 40 Days for Life Spring 2011 Campagin commitment.

Today, we are in need of much help in the afternoon:

12 pm (0)
1 pm (0)
2 pm (0)
3 pm (1)
4 pm (1)
5 pm (1)
6 pm (0)

You can also download this file - for your convenience, two tables of timeslots in need of prayer volunteers are made so you will have 2 copies. I would have missed the opportunity to invite more people to come and pray with us.

Perhaps this is a good time to refresh our commitment to pray outside Everett Planned Parenthood. Here's David Bereit's speech called "Do It Anyway!" - when he was presented with the Henry Hyde Life Leadership Award at an event in Chicago.

Questions help us begin a dialogue with people - whether those patronizing Everett Planned Parenthood, or even those walking by. Unfortunately, Everett Planned Parenthood seems to discourage their employees from having any type of dialogue with us. Earlier in the campaign, one of the employees kindly returned our hello - which is very unusual because normally they completely ignore us.

Through few questions, we found out that they are not allowed to take any of our pamphlets or brochures; nor are they allowed to answer our questions. Hmmm... where's the freedom of "choice"?

Many people who patronize Planned Parenthood would often explain, "I am not here for an abortion. I don't believe in abortion, either." And many of them don't realize that contraception is "abortion in disguise" either.

In this information saturated society, many of us are deprived of the right information, either by choice or because our mind is overcrowded with wrong information.

We are in need of the guidance of Holy Spirit more than ever!

The need for prayer, prayer, prayer!!!

Lord, open our minds, our eyes, and our ears to Your Truth! Help us to turn to You! Guide us and protect us from all evil! Give us the right questions and words to speak with those in most need of your mercy, Lord! Amen!

Day 16 - Prayer Request

Please pray that we will be able to reach out to our community with greater impact - of course in a prayerful, peaceful, and lawful way - during Spring 2011 Campaign.

-----
*** In light of the recent incidents at our vigil location and others in various locations, please be sure that there always be at least 2 volunteers per time slot for the vigil. What a great news from our national team! +Praise & thanks be to God. That's not only 101 babies' lives, but also 101 courageous women's lives - women who resisted the temptation of abortion and because of their "yes" to God, they have also spared the heartaches of their men, grandparents, siblings, and any further cost of abortion in our society.

---------
Times in need of Prayer Volunteers today: The number in ( ) means # of prayer volunteers currently signed up. Let us continue to keep the woman who needed ambulance on Friday and also for the conversion of the staff at Everett Planned Parenthood. May they wake up to the truth that abortion equals killing; however legal it may be. Perhaps they need to read Unplanned by Abby Johnson.

----------
To download today's devotional as a formatted,
printable PDF to share with friends, click here.

----------
Below is in response to incidence that happened on Day 13 (Incident #DD11035193):

Dear Friends,

I have been asked by Schola to send a message out to all of you to let you know some of the issues that have come up at our vigil and when it is appropriate to call the police.

Today, a man appeared at our vigil site with his face covered by a handkerchief or some type of mask and displayed pornographic pictures, flat on the sidewalk just before a family of prayer volunteers arrived with their children. Rightfully so, the family chose not to bring their children on site while the man was there with these materials. What immediately came to my mind is that this must be illegal, displaying pornography in public. I've just begun searching our state laws and the closest thing I can find so far is this:
RCW 9.68.130
"Sexually explicit material" — Defined — Unlawful display.

RCW 9.68.130
"Sexually explicit material" — Defined — Unlawful display.

(1) A person is guilty of unlawful display of sexually explicit material if he knowingly exhibits such material on a viewing screen so that the sexually explicit material is easily visible from a public thoroughfare, park or playground or from one or more family dwelling units.

(2) "Sexually explicit material" as that term is used in this section means any pictorial material displaying direct physical stimulation of unclothed genitals, masturbation, sodomy (i.e. bestiality or oral or anal intercourse), flagellation or torture in the context of a sexual relationship, or emphasizing the depiction of adult human genitals: PROVIDED HOWEVER, That works of art or of anthropological significance shall not be deemed to be within the foregoing definition.

(3) Any person who violates subsection (1) of this section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

I'm not sure why the specific language "on a viewing screen" is necessary, but there may be something elsewhere in the law that pertains more closely to this indecent act.

BOTTOM LINE: CALL THE POLICE IF YOU SEE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY LIKE THIS OR OF ANY OTHER KIND!

It turns out that the same man was attempting to engage some of the other prayer volunteers and mentioned something about a bomb. That's when someone finally called the police. After talking with the police, they encouraged our group to call if we feel threatened by anyone, even if it is only a "gut instinct". They are there for our protection. The pornography display definitely qualifies as a reason to call.

We have heard of several instances at our site and other nearby vigils of incidences where clearly the police should have been called but were not. Examples are of people shoving, hitting and grabbing our signs and tearing them up. These qualify as assault and destruction of an other's property.

So please, call the police if you feel threatened! It's also a good idea to have a cell phone handy and a camera when you come out to pray! Maybe a note pad or note taking device as well!

And remember, "For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places."~Ephesians 6:12

St. Michael the Archangel, Pray for us!

God bless,

Michelle McIntyre

---------

Day 11 - St. Jospeh Pray for the Strength of Fathers and Families

Today is also 3rd Saturday Vigil after 7:30 am mass at St. Mary Magdalen Parish. Sadly, I was there to witness the transport of what appeared to be a severely injured woman to a North Everett Hospital. We are still investigating as to the severity of the botched abortion and only pray that it was not fatal or caused serious injuries.

Events started to unfold a little before 1:00 pm when I heard sirens approaching the corner of Hoyt and 32nd in Everett, Washington. As the red engine rounded the corned from the south I walked hastily to see if it would move beyond Planned Parenthood on Hoyt. Unfortunately it stopped and 3 paramedics unloaded their gear and went in the side entrance.

I had arrived at Planned Parenthood about 10:00 am today and noticed things were different. The sidewalk and the traffic in and out of the clinic weren't the usual hub of activity and conversation. Usually by about 11:00 to 11:30 women are exiting Planned Parenthood after their abortions and more women are arriving. And they come out the front door. Today this didn't happen. Every customer except one came out the side door on to the parking lot.

Christians Shop at Planned Parenthood

I saw this van in the PP parking lot today. It was truly a team effort as everyone on the sidewalk, (and above the sidewalk!) that day had a role to play in helping us realize this happy ending. My hero was Clifford S. who was able to jump the car of the couple that decided to keep their baby and then stayed behind to keep praying and watching the signs and prayer box until more volunteers arrived. We are in contact with this beautiful young mom and are helping her meet some of her immediate needs. There are many people who want to help out in whatever way they can. I think what turned the mom around was the fact that we were offering concrete help and a lifeline at a critical time. We were also peaceful, prayerful, and nonjudgmental. One thing I learned is that we should not be fearful to about approching those outside the clinic who can go inside and communicate our message to the women inside who feel there is no hope.It is truely a blessing to be able to help her and her family out. Olson from St. Mary Magdalen Parish (Everett)
At 3 pm - Fr. Bloom from St. Mary of the Valley (Monroe)

Fr. Bloom wrote in his recent Sunday Bulletin of his parish:

This Lent we have some beautiful activities that will help us focus on God’s Mercy. Many people from St. Mary of the Valley will be participating in 40 Days for Life. Members of our Hispanic Community will be praying in front of the Everett Planned Parenthood abortion clinic on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. I invite you to join me, Sister Barbara and other St. Mary of the Valley parishioners on Thursdays at 3 p.m. In addition our parish youth are planning a specific prayer time. You can learn more and sign up for a specific hour at: http://www.40daysforlife.com/everett/

Even if you are unable to directly participate in 40 Days for Life, I ask you to pray for young women and men tempted by abortion. As Fr. Frank Pavone observed, “Though men cannot have abortions, they can choose abortions. A sin is committed when somebody willingly and knowingly chooses a moral wrong. If, then, a man suggests or pressures his partner to have an abortion, he has committed the sin of abortion.” For him it is a way of evading responsibility for his behavior. Taking the easy way out, however, has long range consequences - and men, as well as women, can feel a need for post-abortion healing which includes repentance and forgiveness through Sacrament of Reconciliation.

A wonderful way of praying for those tempted by abortion is the Spiritual Adoption Program that our Knights of Columbus are sponsoring. The program will begin on March 25. Our Knights of Columbus will have materials for us this weekend. Related to Spiritual Adoption is the Gabriel Project. You will be hearing more as we advance in the season of Lent.

Next Saturday (3/19) our youth will be attending the Theology of the Body Retreat at Holy Family Parish in Seattle. We now have over 50 registered. I do need more adults for our carpool. If you can help, please speak with Maggie Beatte or with me.

----------------------------------------

Below are the photos from today. A lot of activities - indeed never a dull moment outside PP; if not prayerful moments with God, sidewalk counseling opportunities, or even verbal abuse from the oppositions...all for Glory of God!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I arrived about 8:30 am! And the parking lot was already quite filled!

Shortly after 9 am Matt & Georgene arrived with Wilma:

A truck entering PP parking lot, just as I attempted to take photo of how full the parking lot was:

Then I headed to 10 am mass in Northgate. I had to fulfill my promise to get a church near Northgate PP - within walking blocks. I was able to give information about 40 Days for Life to more than 40 people at the church. Many will join next Wed. Today, 6 people came to pray on a busy intersection of Northgate Way & Meridian. It was sunnier across the street:

Day 7 - Pouring Rain & Hail

Brrrr... it was cold and pouring rain! Later, I found out that her son was delivered by a midwife at her home at 3:58 am. Congratulations to Aaron & Savanna, our faithful Core Team members!

I was happy to see my friends from St. Thomas More Parish (three members of Queen of Angels Court of Catholic Daughters of Americas). They were to leave at 2 pm.

So I quickly stopped by home to change my wet layers of clothing.

Then when I got back after 2 pm, I was worried the boxes and signs may not be there. I was pleasantly surprised to find 4 people praying while a teenage girl had a sign "Honk for Life" and there were many honks. And they were in umbrella as the storm had started again. And it poured a lot. Then suddenly I noticed a priest who silently joined us. It was Fr. Saguto from North American Martyrs Parish. He would be the first priest for Spring 2011 Campaign. There will be more priests this week. Please call for the times.

At some point there was even a thunder. And a young lady suddenly showed up and wanted to know what we are doing. I took her a few steps away from the praying group and explained to her what we do and what 40 Days for Life is: that we are praying and fasting; standing outside Everett PP, prayerfully, peacefully, and lawfully; and reaching out to community - for 40 days. She joined us and prayed together; signed Statement of Peace, and promised that she will come back tomorrow. After seeing Fr. Saguto, she wanted to invite her pastor as well. +Praise & thanks be to God!!!

After everyone left, I remained alone between 3 to 4 pm, soon greeted by yet another wave of rain and wind. My new layers of clothes were getting wet again, including my cheap boots.

When the storm quieted again, a beautiful young woman coming out of PP smiled at me. By then I was quite tired, with no more energy to begin any conversation. As she was pulling out of the parking lot, she offered me what looked like a cookie from Star Bucks. I approached her car by the drive way, and motioned her to move her car to the street parking next to me. She rolled down her passenger seat window and I thanked her for her kindness but cordially declined her offer. I told her that instead, I would take her prayers to join ours - for an end to abortion. She told me she's with us on that - but that she had to come to PP for annual exam because she didn't have insurance. But she promised me that she will be promoted next month and that she will go elsewhere for her medical exam.

Then the weather started to clear again, and another prayer volunteer decided to stop by instead of heading out to gym. Thank God, because he was a welcome prayer companion.

By about 5:20 pm, I was at last relieved to go home - thanks to the Monroe Choir Group from St. Mary of the Valley Parish. THANK YOU!!! It has been a long cold weary rainy day!!! But all for Jesus! Amen!

At the end of the day, a serious drying time!

Day 6 - Discipline and Wisdom...

Always challenged with discipline...I pray that we all embrace discipline...

Dr. Tom Curran on Sacred Heart Radio reminded the importance of being faithful to our duties: "quickly, easily, and joyfully". I pray that we can all do that.

Monday's vigil began at 9 am with Wieber family - thank you! But since they could only be there for 30 minutes and our Vigil calendar during this campaign is in an hour increment, instead of 30-minute increment as in previous campaigns, it seems to pose some challenges: so far about 6 people or so. I am not sure if 6 people can justify us changing our system... So for those people, I plea that you bear this with us.

Highlight of the day: the weather was beautiful for the most part! Making us forget about all the rain we had.

There were a lot of activities - thanks to all your prayers. Many of you came for the first time and signed Statement of Peace. And I was able to visit with a new friend from my parish after our vigil at noon. She shared with me her experience at another state: handing out a small basket of goodies (to remind the moms about the reality of having a baby, with such items as diapers, etc.). She will show us an example soon.

At the end of the day, after Dawn had left after her shift at 6:30 pm, a man in bike - who tries to discourage us from praying any chance he gets and who seems to live nearby as he often stops by - commented, "and then there are just two of them..." We disregarded him and just continued to pray. Then he ran over a part of our sign, and it upset me and tempted me to call police for destroying our property. My husband Brad reminded me that it's no big deal and to let it go.

Day 5 - Praying Together

One of the reasons why we chose 3 pm Vigil on Sundays is to remember Jesus' Passion (though 3 pm on Fridays). We call this Divine Mercy Hour.

But the challenge emerges when we are joined by those who seem to be uncomfortable with our way of praying.

Mind you, 40 Days for Life invites all Chritians to join our prayers to God for an end to abortion.

But how do we worship together? How do we pray together?

Some thoughts:
1) We could be standing in different groups (with some space) and pray however we wish, e.g.:
xxx xxxx xxx

2) We could alternate rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Scriptures, spontaneous prayers... - warning: this may require a lot of patience and endurance!

3) In any case, respect for each others' way of worship; with realization, that no one can force anyone; and one can always resort to #1.

4) I believe God is calling us to unite our efforts and to pray together. There are some encouraging signs:

David, who goes to a Lutheran church in Marysville, and who has been keeping 3 pm vigil on Fridays outside Marysville PP along with a few Catholic prayer volunteers, courageously joined our prayers patiently and when he was invited to pray, he read us Psalm 48. Also, since we could not afford to chat instead of praying on just one-hour Vigil on Sundays, David stepped up and offered to talk to a lady who came to talk to us during our vigil on Sunday. This really helped us to focus on prayers.

Pastor Bradley, who's non-denominational, stopped by, introduced himself and expressed his appreciation and encouragement to continue what we do.

Day 4 - Langley, BC!

I really wanted to get started early so I could begin a day with 7:30 am mass at St. Mary Magdalen Parish. I also wanted to meet a couple of faithful ladies from Langley, B.C. who initially signed up from 7 am to 1 pm for 3/12 and 3/19.

Since ours is the nearest 40 Days for Life for them, they wanted to come and join our Vigil. Wow! +Praise & thanks be to God! What an inspiration!

But I failed to meet them as I was getting a late start. (Hopefully, I will meet them on St. Joseph's feast day.) However, God had more work for us.

Brad and I arrived shortly after noon. The weather wasn't getting any better. We met an articulate lady from Arlington, who came out to pray with us for the first time. She was very motivated and was able to articulate what is wrong with Depo-Provera much better than I could. This was prompted after a pretty but frail-looking (as if weak and not well) thin 15-year old girl shared with me that she was at PP for Depo-Provera.

(Notice the big cross made by Clifford Sheet, who has been coming to vigil almost daily. He took the cross to March for Life in Olympia in January 18, 2011. There are few others who have been coming out almost daily! - thank you!!!)

More prayer volunteers later...then a woman said she used to come and pray with us. She was going into PP because she has been coughing for two weeks and since she does not have insurance, she was resorting to PP. We were quite sure that PP would not treat her. Sure enough, after more than an hour, she exits PP, reporting to us that she wasted her time.

We were quite sure that most hospitals have some type of financial assistance program, for those with low-income and without any insurance. Brad & I led her to Providence Hospital up the 32nd Ave. to the Emergency. After more than hour or so, she was diagnosed with bronchitis and was given prescription. She thanked us profusely.

After we returned from Providence Hospital, we were able to pray with our Campaign co-Director Ed Mohs, who has been keeping the vigil alone since about 4 pm. Then at 5:30 pm another prayer volunteer showed up and since it was his first time, we volunteered to stay on with him. Bryan Hersey, who also encouraged everyone to participate in 40 Days for Life and to talk to me after mass when I gave him two thumbs up...and I had opportunity to speak with three women at different levels of concerns on Life issues - here we are praying:

Later I found out, that meanwhile, a life was being saved at Next Step. Here's a story from Mary Emanuel, one of our Core Team members:

Dear friends –

I want to tell you about the wonderful save we had at the Everett Planned Parenthood on Friday.

When I arrived at PP with my friend Sonia there were already many prayer warriors out front. Sheila, George and Pat I think are the ones who were leading the prayers. We discovered through conversations with the friends of a women inside the clinic that they were trying to talk her out of having an abortion. Ultimately, they were successful and they asked us to help, which we did. We all agreed to meet for lunch but when it came time to go we discovered that their car battery had died! But Clifford, our guardian angel, was there with his jumper cables and got them going again. Clifford also stayed behind to keep vigil, guard the signs and prayer box, and wait for the next shift.

(All names, except those with 40 D4L, have been changed.)

Meanwhile, there were many activities at PP. At some point there were three teenage boys (about 7th graders), who were entering PP to use bathroom. I gently suggested why not use other building. As they came out of PP, one of the boys exclaimed, "we saw this lady who just passed out!" We were able to discuss current events, i.e. the unfortunate earthquake in Japan; and we agreed that as times are hard, we really need to pray more. I also challenged them to think about the root causes of our societal problems, and gave them Human Life Alliance's Just for Girls / Just 4 Guys

With Dorothy, a faithful prayer volunteer, who goes over to Marysville PP immediately 3 pm every Friday, immediately after a vigil outside Everett PP:

With Christopher, another faithful prayer volunteer, who also goes over to Marysville PP for weekly vigil at 3 pm:

Then shortly after 3 pm, I had a very encouraging dialogue with a woman with a beautiful heart. Unfortunately, she does not have the conviction that abortion is wrong with no exception. In any case, we had many common grounds, and we shared a warm friendly hug and to keep in touch - but I can't even keep up with this blog. Help!

Then another faithful prayer volunteer showed up. (He's with Mary Emanuel's sign, while she was out saving a baby...) He is the one who helped me with my car earlier (after 12:15 mass at Immaculate Conception Parish) when I couldn't get it started for the first time since I got my car in 2002. Thanks, Paul!

Day 3 - Standing in the Gap

We need more prayer volunteers today: The number in ( ) means # of prayer volunteers currently signed up. Otherwise, 2nd Day coverage was very good with at least 31 prayer volunteers total throughout the day. There were as many as 6 prayer volunteers between 8:30 am to 9 am. One of our prayer volunteers stopped by at 11 am then again at 3:30 pm. These were the times when we needed at least one more prayer volunteer.

During 3:30 - 4 pm and 6:15 - 7 pm, the Planned Parenthood parking lot was quite full. A couple of high school girls were entering Planned Parenthood shortly before 4 pm "to pick up condoms". They took rosary and a pamphlet on chastity (by Human Life Alliance); in addition, they appreciated a prayer. We prayed that the Holy Spirit guide them and protect them from all evils.

Click here to read today’s devotional.

Click here to download today’s devotional as a formatted, printable PDF to share with friends.

Schola Frisinger
Campaign Co-Director
Everett 40 Days for Life

Day 1. Looking forward to Victory

There are many things to be thankful for!

Here’s a quick list of the blessings that God has provided through seven previous coordinated 40 Days for Life campaigns:

    * 400,000 have joined to pray and fast for an end to abortion
* 13,000+ church congregations have participated in 40 Days for Life campaigns
* Reports document 3,599 lives that have been spared from abortion — and those are just the ones we know about
* 43 abortion workers have quit their jobs and walked away from the abortion industry
* Nine abortion facilities completely shut down following local 40 Days for Life campaigns
* Women and men have been spared from the effects of abortion, including a lifetime of regrets
* More than 1,200 news stories have been featured in radio shows, newspapers, magazines and TV programs
* Many people with past abortion experiences have begun post-abortion healing and recovery
* After 38 years of legalized abortion, people of faith are experiencing a renewed sense of HOPE!

Though the very first shift (7 am) began with a drizzle which soon turned into more rain, many of us appreciate God calling us to pray for his people. At about 8:15 am or so a volunteer escort in raincoat came outside of PP and stood by the trash can.

<no report yet for shifts from 8:15 am...to be added as soon as more reports come in.>

We thank God for 40 Days for Life. For calling our national leadership team to motivate many of us to participate in one of the largest grass roots movement of this pro-life effort to end abortion.

Please see today's reflection by Shawn Carney, our National Director for the Spring 2011 Campaign about the reasons why we look forward to victory.

Click here for today’s devotional from David Brandao, 40 Days for Life’s communications director.

We had a very good coverage today - for the most part until about 6 pm. Dave, a shift leader, was praying all by himself, and reported that Everett Planned Parenthood seemed to be having Teen hours from about 5 pm or so, when the staff began leaving. PP was scheduled to close at 4:30 pm on Wednesday.

Dave was to pray with a prayer volunteer at 1 pm, but his prayer partner forgot to take medication and wasn't feeling very well at all...so Dave had to come back and resume his shift at about 1:30 pm.

Meanwhile, Thurday's shift leader Rachel, reported, "it has been interesting being out there today. God blesses us in many ways, including rain...".

Dave & I agreed that we should take off at 6:15 pm since it was getting dark and I had to catch Ash Wednesday mass at 7 pm. As I was leaving, I decided to talk to a young lady with a brown bag. She told me that she doesn't believe in abortion and she knows how wrong abortion is. She was there to pick up condoms. She's not married, but knows what the right thing to do is. I asked her if we could pray together. I prayed thanking God for opening her heart to speak with me. I also prayed that her boyfriend loves her and respect her...

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://e40dfl.blogspot.com/2011/03/day-1-looking-forward-to-victory.html' title='Day 1. Amen!

Thanks also to our dedicated Core Team members and shift leaders, we had a fair start on Vigil sign-up prior to our Kick-off event. We also had - (thanks to Georgene for sharing what worked at North Seattle Kick-Off Rally!) - a drawing for Abby Johnson's book, Unplanned!

Congratulations to the winners:
1) Linda G. - winner among those who signed up by 3/7/11.
2) Pat F. - winner among those who signed up today before 8 pm
3) Sheila - winner who's present & among everyone signed up before 8:30 pm

Also thanks to St. Mary of the Valley Music Ministry members, we were surrounded by beautiful and uplifting music.

In addition, Fr. Phillip Bloom of the same parish in Monroe, thanked and encouraged us with more reasons to continue our spiritual battle against the evils of abortion; and how important and powerful our prayers are - however we may be discouraged at times.

Fr. Bloom also shared with a miraculous story of Fr. Ed White. When Fr. Bloom stopped by to change oil in Kirkland, the attendant told him about how his wife and he changed their mind about abortion after speaking with Fr. Ed White outside an abortion facility; and that he had become a father of 15 year old baby.

What an encouraging story! +Praise & thanks be to God!

Fr. Bloom continued how God works miracles through such a prayerful person as Fr. White; and again how powerful prayer and fasting are.

Day 14: Ambassadors for Christ (2Cor 5:20)

Everett 40 Days for Life is growing - thanks to many dedicated volunteers. Even though we chose not to do 24/7 Vigil outside of Everett Planned Parenthood, we know that there are many people praying during this 40 Days.

Some of us stop by whenever we can, many of us are committed to an hour here and there, and several of us come every day or even several hours or even nearly entire day or two dedicated to pray to end abortion in Everett.

So far we have reports of 2 saves - thanks be to God!

As the Ambassadors for Christ (2Cor 5:20), we are praying and standing witness to the truth that life is precious from the moment of conception to natural death. This means that we are standing there non-judgmental - only to wake the conscience of the community about the evil of abortion.

Many men and women are wounded because of abortion.
